The Two Thieves

2theves

I attended a football coaching convention this past Saturday, and the head football coach at Rutgers University, Greg Schiano, was the keynote speaker.

He spoke about a lot of things, but one idea that really stuck with me was something he called “The Two Thieves.”

The two thieves are the past and the future, and they rob us of the ability to live in the present.

I’d like to apply this idea to nutrition and lifestyle change.

Looking too far into the past can prevent us from making changes today.
You might think:

“I’ve tried dieting before and I always fail… so why bother?”

That mindset keeps people stuck.

On the other hand, looking too far into the future can also stop us from taking action.

You might think:

“This is going to take forever.”

Or

“Losing weight takes months… I’ll never get there.”

Both mindsets steal the only moment that actually matters: right now.

The truth is that real change happens when we focus on what we can do today.

That’s exactly why we’re launching a 30-day nutrition challenge at the gym starting April 1st.

The focus is simple:

  • Reduce sweet treats
  • Reduce alcohol
  • Move your body more

Will your entire life change in 30 days?

Probably not.

And it takes longer than 30 days to truly lock in a habit.

But those 30 days can create the momentum that carries you into the next 30… and the next.

Sometimes the most important step isn’t finishing the journey.

It’s simply starting.
